Are you looking for a cozy and charming winter holiday in the Southwest USA? Then you are in the right spot.
Winter is my favorite season – with the exception of fall, maybe. Since we don’t get a lot of snow in New Mexico, I spend a lot of time venturing into our neighboring states each winter for a charming winter vacation.
If you are also interested in doing some skiing, hiking, or simply relaxing by the fireplace on a snowy day, this post is for you.
Even though the Southwest does not sound very wintery, you’d be surprised how many places get a lot of snow each year!
Let’s get into it!

Table of Contents
Colorado
1. Telluride
Telluride is the perfect spot for a winter getaway – I think it might even be my favorite.
You can find it tucked in the San Juan Mountains, and it offers amazing skiing with stunning mountain views.
After a day on the slopes, the cute downtown is perfect for exploring. You can find cozy restaurants and unique shops. The town has historic charm, while it is still upscale and classy (especially if you head up to Mountain Village).
If you’re looking for a beautiful, upscale winter escape, Telluride is hard to beat!
Psst: Telluride is also awesome in the fall!

2. Aspen
The next one might not come as a surprise to you – Aspen is a staple on many people’s winter bucket lists.
Aspen is an amazing winter getaway with top-notch skiing and breathtaking mountain views.
The town is full of charm, with luxury shops, cute cafés, and a fun après-ski scene.
It might be expensive, but Aspen is worth visiting.
It’s perfect for anyone who loves a mix of adventure and style.
Insider tip: if you want a quieter experience, visit during weekdays or explore nearby Snowmass for great skiing without the crowds.

3. Durango
Durango is an awesome winter getaway, combining outdoor fun and small-town charm. Durango is awesome in the fall as well!
It is a bit less expensive than Telluride and Aspen – so make sure to put it on your list!
You can hit the slopes at Purgatory Resort for great skiing or take a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad through snowy mountain views.
The town itself is super cozy as well. I just love strolling around there. Stay for at least 3 days in Durango to see it all!
Insider tip: Don’t miss the winter hot springs in nearby Pagosa Springs—they’re perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure!

4. Vail
Vail is a winter paradise, famous for its incredible skiing and luxurious vibes. They even have international ski races there every year.
Make sure to put Vail on your winter bucket list – you won’t regret it!
The slopes are world-class, and the European-style village is filled with upscale shops, cozy cafés, and restaurants. It kinda reminds me of home – just with a lot more snow.
Insider tip: Head to Vail’s back bowls for a less crowded, epic skiing experience that feels like a hidden gem within the resort.

New Mexico
5. Taos
Taos is a perfect winter getaway in the Southwest because it offers a mix of charming adobe architecture, rich Native American culture, and world-class skiing at Taos Ski Valley.
The town is quite cozy and reminds me of New Mexican charm, with some alpine influences as well.
Since New Mexico was never on my radar for a winter holiday, I was quite surprised by how much Taos appealed to me!
Secret tip: Visit the Earthship Biotecture community! There, you can explore futuristic, eco-friendly homes made from recycled materials.

6. Ruidoso
Ruidoso, NM, has a special place in my heart for sure.
The cute little mountain town in Southern New Mexico looks like it is right out of a picture book.
In winter, you can do some fun skiing on Ski Apache or enjoy a relaxing spa day at the Inn of the Mountain Gods on Mescalero Lake.
Ruidoso has recently suffered big losses in the wildfires, so they need all the tourist support they can get!
Secret tip: check out Ruidoso’s cool old town! They have lots of charming small businesses there that sell arts and crafts!

7. Santa Fe
Santa Fe is an awesome winter getaway because it has a cozy mix of history, art, and fun outdoor activities.
Santa Fe is famous for being the “artistic capital” of New Mexico, so it is definitely worth visiting.
You can explore cool museums, enjoy warm fireplaces, and even go skiing at Ski Santa Fe. The town’s unique adobe buildings and snowy streets make it feel super magical in the winter.
They also have lots of interesting hotels with access to natural hot springs – so make sure to check those out!
Secret tip: Check out Meow Wolf, an amazing and quirky art experience!

Arizona
8. Sedona
Sedona is one of my favorite spots in Arizona – and it is a perfect winter getaway with its stunning red rock views, peaceful hiking trails, and mild weather.
It’s a great spot to relax (the area is supposed to have healing qualities), take in the natural beauty, or go on an adventure like exploring vortex sites or off-roading.
Plus, fewer crowds in winter make it even better to enjoy the scenery. Make sure to stay for at least 5 days in Sedona to enjoy it to the fullest.
Insider tip: Check out West Fork at Oak Creek – it has lovely scenery (not only in winter).

9. Flagstaff
Flagstaff is an awesome winter getaway because it has everything from skiing and snowboarding at Arizona Snowbowl to cozy cabins and hot chocolate vibes.
I love Flagstaff so much – because it reminds me of my home in the Alps! It is very much unlike any other city in Arizona, that’s for sure!
It is a lovely town with beautiful pine forests covered in snow. Plus, it’s close to the Grand Canyon for a cool day trip.
Secret tip: Head to Lowell Observatory for some incredible stargazing! Flagstaff is one of the best places in the country for dark skies and amazing views of the stars!

10. Tucson
Tucson is a great winter getaway with its warm desert sun and huge Saguaro cacti. I also love the charm of the city – it is simply special!
And there is so much to do in Tucson!
You can hike through stunning desert landscapes, explore Saguaro National Park, or enjoy a winter wonderland only a short drive up Mount Lemmon. This is one of the most scenic highways in the US, btw.
If you want to combine your holiday with some relaxation, Loews Ventana Canyon Spa is the place to be!
Secret tip: Visit the Mission San Xavier del Bac, a beautiful and historic Spanish mission just outside of town. It’s a peaceful spot with amazing architecture and a lesser-known gem!

Utah
11. Zion National Park
Zion National Park is one of the most stunning places in Utah – and it is a great spot to visit in winter.
Once you enter the park through a short tunnel, you’ll be blown away by the incredibly high mountains all around you. In the valley, you’ll find a beautiful little creek flowing peacefully through the park.
There are lots of incredible hiking trails in Zion, but my favorite is the Watchman Trail – because anyone can do it and the views are amazing!
Insider tip: Winter is the best time to visit because you’ll be able to drive through the park with your own car and explore the scenic route.

12. Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon is probably my favorite National Park in the US – and it is incredibly stunning in winter.
The bright orange sandstone formations look so charming when they are covered in snow – it is a sight to behold.
Hike the entire Rim Trail for the best views – ideally in the morning or in the evening for better light! I
f you are not big on hiking, Bryce Canyon is super-easily accessible by car, and you can reach all the fantastic view platforms easily.
Insider tip: keep your eyes open when driving toward the park – the highway is one of the most scenic in the US! You’ll drive through two fantastic red sandstone tunnels that make for an awesome picture.

Park City is a perfect winter getaway for snow lovers. It is one of the best winter holiday destinations in Utah for sure.
Park City offers top-notch skiing, snowboarding, and beautiful mountain views. It’s also known for its cozy, small-town charm.
I love that the town has plenty of cute shops, restaurants, and après-ski spots to warm up after a day on the slopes.
There are lots of great fancy resorts and luxurious Airbnbs for you to choose from in this area, so it is great for a luxury getaway.
Secret tip: Check out the Alpine Coaster at Park City Mountain—it’s a super fun ride through the snowy landscape and a unique way to experience the winter wonderland!

14. Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is an awesome winter getaway with easy access to some of the best ski resorts in the country.
What I love most is that it is a mix of city life and beautiful mountain scenery.
You can hit the slopes in the morning and enjoy great dining and shopping downtown by night.
Secret tip: Head to the Great Salt Lake for a peaceful winter hike along the shoreline—it’s super quiet in the winter, and the views of the snow-capped mountains reflecting off the water are stunning!

Nevada
15. Lake Tahoe
While the choice for a romantic winter getaway in Nevada is slightly smaller than in the other Southwestern states, it still has a great spot to offer.
Lake Tahoe is a perfect and chic winter getaway with its gorgeous blue waters surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
It’s a dream spot for skiing, snowboarding, or just enjoying the stunning views and cozy cabin vibes. Whether you’re on the slopes or by the fire, Tahoe has something for everyone.
