For this reason, I have created this ultimate guide with my favorite places for a lovely retreat in fall and winter. Find some hidden gems, as well as some all-time favorites, on this list.

Cozy Cabin Getaway Map
1. Durango, CO

Durango, CO, is perfect for a cabin holiday because the mountains turn golden in the fall and snowy in the winter. You’ll get all the charm of Aspen, without the high prices.
The town center is super cozy, with fun things to do and great restaurants.
One of the most beloved things to do in Durango is to go on a historic train ride and visit nearby hot springs.
Insider tip: Visit in early October for the best fall colors and fewer crowds! Check my 3-Day Durango itinerary for more insider tips!
2. Cloudcroft, NM

Cloudcroft is a small village in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. It is an amazing, underrated spot for a cabin holiday, with cool, crisp mountain air and colorful fall leaves in the fall.
You’ll get snow-covered trees and fun skiing slopes in winter, with a beautiful view of the White Sands National Park in the background.
This small village is also somewhat of a hidden gem; it looks like it is right out of an old Western movie.
Insider tip: check out Mad Jack’s BBQ for one of the best meals of your life.
3. Minocqua, WI

Looking for a cozy cabin holiday? Head over to Minocqua, Wisconsin!
It’s located in the northern part of the state and is great for folks who want to spend time in nature with that special someone.
Minocqua has a quaint main street with an old-fashioned feel.
Insider Tip: Don’t miss Dan’s Minocqua Fudge, where you’ll be faced with a tempting array of sweet treats from salt water taffy to decadent fudge (try the peanut butter fudge!).
Enjoy the sights of the beautiful Minocqua Lake, complete with water skiing shows in the summer. (It’s also great for fishing if you enjoy spending your day on the lake fishing!)
If you love fall foliage, the fabulous colors of the forest are a feast for the eyes. Every day reveals a new color palette of oranges and reds as you drive through the countryside.
4. Lake Tahoe, NV/CA

Lake Tahoe is not so much of a hidden gem, but still a dream destination for a cabin holiday. It is known for crystal-clear waters, stunning mountain views, and a peaceful atmosphere in fall or winter.
While most people visit Lake Tahoe in summer for the swimming season, I am a big fan of enjoying a relaxing fall day lakeside.
You can enjoy everything from hiking in the fall to skiing in the winter, all while relaxing in a cozy cabin.
Insider tip: For a quieter experience, head to Tahoma, a small village on the west shore. It’s less busy than other parts of Tahoe, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat.
5. Jackson Hole, WY

You might have seen this next tip for a cozy fall holiday in the US already on TikTok. If not, you are missing out.
Jackson Hole is an incredible spot for a cabin getaway, especially in fall and winter.
It is super close to Grand Teton National Park, which is perfect for enjoying nature.
In the fall, the area bursts with stunning colors. In winter, it transforms into a snowy paradise perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and wildlife spotting.
Insider tip: Visit in late September for the best fall foliage and a chance to see elk in their natural habitat, all without the winter crowds.
6. Catskills, NY

The Catskills are a perfect destination for a cozy cabin getaway in the US in the fall or winter.
This region is known for its artistic communities, cozy farm-to-table restaurants, and outdoor activities that let you fully embrace the changing seasons.
You can find lots of trails leading you to beautiful waterfalls, over rolling hills, and into colorful forests. The town of Phoenicia is especially quiet and lovely at this time of the year.
Insider tip: Check out Kaaterskill Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in New York, for a breathtaking hike that’s especially stunning in the fall.
7. Olympic Peninsula, WA
If you are as obsessed with Twilight as I am, you’ll likely love the vibe of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
You’ll get a gloomy, rainy cabin holiday – perfect for reading or sitting by the fireplace. Get a cabin by the lake and you’ll have a lovely foggy backdrop.
This vacation is gonna give you less Indian summer vibes and more of a moody excuse to stay inside!

8. Park City, UT

If you are looking for something a bit more upscale and less rustic, Park City in Utah is perfect for your fall/winter getaway.
Park City offers a blend of luxury and mountain charm. This town is super famous for its world-class skiing, but it also has a vibrant arts scene.
Staying in a fancy chalet here means stunning mountain views, cozy fireplaces, and top-notch amenities.
Insider tip: Opt for a chalet in Deer Valley for a more exclusive experience. It has less crowded slopes!
9. Flagstaff, AZ

Flagstaff is a perfect spot for a fall or winter cabin getaway in the United States.
In the fall, the forests around town burst into vibrant colors, which is lovely for scenic hikes and drives.
When winter arrives, Flagstaff turns into a snowy paradise, perfect for skiing at Arizona Snowbowl or cozying up in a cabin.
What makes Flagstaff unique is its mix of rugged outdoor beauty and the charm of a small mountain town.
Insider tip: Since Flagstaff is 7,000 feet above sea level, you’ll get some of the clearest night skies for stargazing!
10. Stowe, Vermont

Stowe, Vermont, is an ideal destination for a fall or winter cabin escape – and you have probably seen all the scenic videos on Instagram already!
So keep in mind that this one is not so much a hidden gem, but more like an all-time favorite that needed to be on this list!
In the fall, the town is surrounded by stunning foliage, which makes the small towns in the area look extra cute and Instagram-worthy.
When winter arrives, Stowe becomes a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing and cozy cabin stays
Stowe’s picturesque village, complete with covered bridges and local shops, makes it feel like you’ve stepped into a winter postcard.
11. Sedona, AZ
One of the coolest destinations to visit in fall or winter is Sedona, AZ. While the famous red rocks don’t automatically make you think “cozy cabin holiday,” there is much more to it than meets the eye.
Sedona gets quieter in the fall, but what most people don’t know is that it is one of the best destinations in the Southwest USA to see stunning foliage.
And in winter (if you are lucky), you’ll get to enjoy the stunning red rock formations covered in a layer of beautiful snow.

13. Ruidoso, NM
Lovely mountain village with awesome fall scenery and winter skiing. It is one of New Mexico’s hidden gems for sure.
Ruidoso has a lovely charm to it because the village is so small and the community is tight-knit. Most of the cabins there are rented out by locals, instead of by bigger corporations.
The village recently suffered big losses from a forest fire, and they need every visitor they can get!
Insider tip: Visit the cute shops selling Native American pottery on Main Street.

14. White Mountains, NM
The White Mountains in New Hampshire are an absolute fall dream, and there is no better place for a cabin getaway. The foliage here is insanely vibrant, one of the prettiest I have ever seen.
It’s one of the first places in the U.S. to hit peak color, usually late September to early October. It kicks off leaf season perfectly – and if you are a bit impatient (like me) it is a great place to go!
There are cute covered bridges, scenic train rides (like the Conway Scenic Railroad), and cozy mountain towns that look straight out of a postcard.
Insider tip: Drive the Kancamagus Highway for some of the best fall foliage in New England

15. Poconos, PA
The Poconos is a classic mountain retreat with rolling hills, dense forests, and plenty of outdoor activities. That makes it a great spot for a fall or winter cabin escape.
Peak colors usually hit in early to mid-October. The views from spots like the Kancamagus Highway are unreal.
You can take a cozy train ride, go ziplining through the trees, or just relax in a cute cabin with a fireplace.
It’s peaceful, colorful, and full of fall charm.
Insider tip: Visit Bushkill Falls, often called the “Niagara of Pennsylvania,” for a beautiful waterfall hike.

16. Taos, NM
Another great destination in New Mexico for a winter or fall holiday is Taos.
Taos is a unique blend of artistic culture and rugged mountain beauty. It is absolutely perfect for enjoying vibrant fall colors or snowy winter days in a cozy cabin.

17. Telluride, CO
Telluride is one of my favorite places in the Southwest, and it is amazing for a cabin getaway.
While it is a bit of a luxury destination, Telluride has so much to offer for everyone. Beautiful views, stunning skiing slopes, and amazing fall foliage make it so special.
It is a great place for hiking and relaxing, and because of the upscale vibe, it never feels crowded or loud.
Insider tip: Stay in Telluride Mountain Village – it feels like a place right out of a fairytale.

18. Moab, UT
Moab is stunning in the fall, so it definitely needs to be on your bucket list! 🍂
The red rock landscapes glow even brighter against the golden cottonwood trees and clear blue skies. It’s way cooler than the summer heat, making it perfect for hiking in Arches and Canyonlands.
Moab even gets a little bit of snow in winter, which makes it so cozy and charming!
Insider tip: Hike to the Morning Glory Arch, you’ll see beautiful fall foliage here!

19. Blue Ridge, GA
Blue Ridge is a scenic mountain town with stunning fall colors, cozy cabins, and a friendly, small-town atmosphere.
It is perfect for a relaxing getaway that gives you Gilmore Girls vibes.
You’ve got scenic train rides, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and cozy mountain views all around.
Downtown Blue Ridge is super cute too, with local shops, breweries, and cafés.
