Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Komodo?
Big cruise ships visiting Komodo Island don’t dock directly at the island. Komodo does not have a cruise port or any facilities for large vessels.
Instead, they anchor offshore. You will be tendered ashore using smaller boats. These tenders bring guests to a long pier leading to the Komodo Ranger Station at Loh Liang on Komodo Island.
When booking a shore excursion, make sure to select this place as a starting point for the tour!
Important: It is not permitted to explore the island by yourself; you need to book a guided tour or shore excursion!
Even though Komodo Island is the main cruise destination, some cruise itineraries may also include stops at nearby Rinca Island. It is also part of the Komodo National Park.

Best Shore Excursions for Cruise Visitors
Since we know now that you need to book an excursion to see Komodo National Park, we can take a closer look on what the possibilities are for your day in Komodo.
Since most cruises only stop for a day, here are some of the best tour options to make the most of your time:
- Komodo Dragon & Pink Beach Tour
- Padar Island & Komodo Dragon Tour
- Manta Point Snorkeling & Komodo Island Tour
- Private Speedboat Tour: A private speedboat tour will let you visit multiple spots quickly, avoiding crowds.
No matter which tour you choose, always check with your cruise line to confirm timings and whether independent excursions are allowed.
Justin’s Tip: While I usually encourage people to book their excursions not with the cruise line but with independent companies, I would stick to a guided tour from the ship in Komodo due to the lack of offers.

10 Best Things To Do in Komodo On a Cruise
1. See Komodo Dragons
Your first stop on this cruise will likely be the Komodo Ranger Station.
Since this is the main access point for seeing the Komodo dragons (the biggest attraction on the island), I suggest to tick this one off your bucket list first!
These prehistoric-looking creatures are the largest lizards in the world. I found them kinda impressive since they can be up to 10 feet long.
A guided tour through the park is required, and a ranger will take you on one of the designated trails to spot these cute predators in their natural habitat.

2. Hike The Trails
Inside the Komodo National Park, there are several hiking trails you can choose from.
🐉 Short Trail (30–45 minutes): This is the easiest and most popular route. Sadly, it can get crowded with tourists. You’ll still have a great chance of spotting dragons near the ranger station.
🐉 Medium Trail (1–1.5 hours): I love this more peaceful and scenic hike with fewer crowds. You’ll have a better chance to spot Komodo dragons in the wild while enjoying stunning views, too!
🐉 Long Trail (2+ hours): If you have some time, this is my favorite option for adventure seekers. You’ll not just seekomodo dragons but also other wildlife like deer, wild boar, and exotic birds.
No matter which trail you choose, you’ll learn some great facts about Komodo dragons and their unique behaviors.
If you have the time and prefer a less crowded experience when spotting dragons, the medium trail is your best bet!
Due to the potential danger posed by the dragons, all tours must be accompanied by a guide!

3. Snorkel at Pink Beach
Just a short boat ride from Komodo Island, Pink Beach is my favorite place in the National Park.
Its rosy-hued sand gets its color from tiny red coral fragments mixing with the white sand. It was the most gorgeous shoreline I’ve ever seen!
The beach isn’t just instagrammable—it’s also one of the best snorkeling spots in the park. Underwater, you’ll find a coral garden with colorful fish, sea turtles, and even small reef sharks.
Apart from snorkeling, lounging on the beach, and getting great shots for your socials, you can also rent clear-bottom kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

4. Take a Boat to Padar Island for a Hike with a View
Padar Island is known for its dramatic, Jurassic Park-like landscape (one of the most photographed landscapes in Indonesia).
While the views are breathtaking, it can get quite crowded with tourists. This often means waiting in line for photo spots at popular viewpoints.
The area can feel busy and chaotic at times, but it is possible to find a quieter area where you can take in the panoramic views.
The hike to the top is fairly manageable, with most of the path made up of stairs. It only takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Along the way, there are several viewpoints with stunning photo opportunities. I think the climb is well worth the effort.
From the summit, you’ll see the island’s unique three-colored beaches—one pink, one white, and one black- against the turquoise waters of the Flores Sea.

5. Swim with Manta Rays at Manta Point
Manta Point is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves marine life (like me!).
This site is famous for its manta rays, which can grow up to 20 feet wide.
Even if you’re just snorkeling, you’ll likely spot these graceful creatures gliding through the water. The currents here can be strong, so make sure to follow your guide’s instructions.
Aside from manta rays, you may also see reef sharks, sea turtles, and loads of tropical fish.

6. Visit Taka Makassar
One of the coolest, hidden-gem things to do in Komodo from the cruise ship is visiting Taka Makassar.
Taka Makassar is a tiny sandbar in the middle of the ocean – super unique!
This little sandbar magically appears and disappears with the tides. It is a great spot to swim, sunbathe, or just relax in the shallow, crystal-clear waters.
Since it’s so small, most tours only stop by for a short time—but even a quick visit is enough to enjoy the beauty and take some Insta-snaps.

7. Snorkel at Kanawa Island
Kanawa Island is another fantastic snorkeling spot near Komodo Island. You can book a shore excursion there and be surprised by the underwater world.
Kanawa Island is a little paradise with shallow coral reefs and plenty of tropical fish. The calm waters are especially perfect for beginner snorkelers.
If you’d rather stay dry, you can enjoy walking along the powdery white sand beach! This is a prime spot to fly a drone if you have one!

8. Hike Up to the Viewpoint on Pulau Kelor Island
Pulau Kelor is a little island in the Komodo National Park that is gonna take your breath away. If you have time on your Komodo shore day, this is the place to be!
On the island, you can take a short hike to the top of a hill for stunning views of the turquoise waters and landscape.
The quiet beach there is ideal for a swim or simply photographing the beautiful landscape. From there, you can spot baby sharks swimming in the waters.

9. Explore Rinca Island
Unlike the more popular Komodo Island, Rinca is quieter and less crowded.
Here, you can have a more intimate wildlife experience. You might spot Timor deer grazing, wild boars rustling through the underbrush, mischievous macaques, and eagles overhead.
The island also has some beautiful trails that will lead you to stunning viewpoints. You can see lots of pretty islands from here in the deep blue ocean.

10. Enjoy a Sunset at Kalong Island
If your cruise schedule allows for an evening excursion, don’t miss Kalong Island, also known as “Bat Island.”
Every evening, thousands of massive bats wake up, stretch their wings, and take off from the island in search of dinner.
They fill the entire sky in swirling, shadowy waves. Believe me, it is a sight you don’t want to miss.
Most visitors see this from a boat, as the island itself isn’t open for exploration. It’s the perfect way to end your cruise day in Komodo National Park!

Tips for Your Komodo Shore Day
First of all, I suggest you wear comfortable shoes! If you’re hiking on Komodo or Padar Island, you’ll need sturdy shoes. Flip-flops aren’t ideal for these trails.
Make sure to pack lightly since many boat tours have limited space, so bring only essentials like sunscreen, water, and a hat.
Always respect the wildlife. In any case, you need to listen to your guide’s instructions when near the Komodo dragons and avoid getting too close.
Lastly, bring cash – some small fees (like entrance fees or ranger tips) may require cash.

Conclusion
Planning what to do on your shore day in Komodo can be a bit tricky. For one, there are not a lot of providers offering good trips.
On the other hand, you are also not allowed to explore the Komodo National Park by yourself. That leaves you with having to book a shore excursion in Komodo from the cruise ship.
In this post, I discussed what kind of excursions there are in Komodo and highlighted the best things to do on your shore day there.
From seeing cute little Komodo dragons to some stunning views and impressive islands, our day is not short of Insta-amazing spots. And I haven’t even mentioned the pink beach yet!
I hope you enjoyed this guide to help you pick the best shore excursions in Komodo.
